Avengers: Endgame edges ever closer to Avatar’s all-time box office record, taking in another $2.8 million this weekend. These last few days have brought the Avengers: Infinity War sequel’s box office total to almost $2.781 billion, putting it less than $8 million behind Avatar’s $2.788 billion figure.
Domestically, Endgame continues to bring in a steady audience. This weekend, the film is estimated to have earned another $1.69 million in North America, bringing the movie’s total to $851.2 million. Not too shabby, though it’s long been clear that the Russo Brothers’ latest feature isn’t going to touch the $936.7 million figure boasted by the current domestic record-holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
No doubt the film’s re-release played an important role in Endgame’s continued success. The extended edition added a mere six minutes of bonus material, including a Stan Lee tribute, an unfinished deleted scene and a Spider-Man: Far From Home clip. But while many fans weren’t too pleased with these meager offerings, there were apparently enough filmgoers won over by the extra content to push Endgame back into the domestic box office Top 10 for two weekends.
Nonetheless, it seems that the film has slipped out of the Top 10 once more, and it looks like Marvel is running out of promotional cards to play. Back in April, you may recall that the movie got off to a phenomenally strong start, breaking a whole load of international box office records in its first week. Since then, however, the film simply hasn’t sustained its success as well as Avatar did, but the finish line is getting close.
Does Avengers: Endgame still have the momentum to remove James Cameron’s sci-fi megahit from the all-time top spot? We wouldn’t rule it out, though Disney may have created some fierce competition for itself in the form of the upcoming Lion King.
