Avengers: Endgame Officially Crosses $2 Billion Worldwide

Avengers: Endgame has crossed $2 billion worldwide after its second weekend in theaters, with the film now eyeing Avatar's spot on the charts.

As a standalone movie, Avengers: Endgame is an exhilarating rollercoaster of blockbuster action and fan service at its finest, with a few glaring plot holes to boot. But as the final chapter in this current era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was pretty much perfect.

So perfect that it warrants one or two Oscar nominations, though? Disney and Marvel Studios certainly seem to think so, as the companies are apparently planning a major push for Endgame ahead of the 2019-2020 awards circuit. And we know what you’re thinking; superhero movies often don’t resonate with Academy voters.

You’re right, but following last year’s Best Picture nomination for Black Panther, there’s now a precedent for the Powers That Be to recognize what is hands down the MCU’s crowning achievement – a historic feat in and of itself, given that last year saw the release of Infinity War and its own super-sized ensemble.

But even if Endgame walks away with no Oscar nods at all, it will still always be remembered as one of the all-time biggest films at the box office, with the sequel crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide after only its second weekend in theaters.

Yes, that’s right, Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest effort has now grossed $2.188 billion globally ($619.6 million domestically and $1.56 billion internationally), putting it in a very exclusive club of movies that also includes its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. What’s perhaps even more impressive though is that it’s also sailed right past Titanic to become the second highest grossing film of all-time.

Next stop? Avatar, which is still somehow – almost inexplicably – the king of the box office at $2.78 billion. Can Avengers: Endgame surpass it? Time will tell, but at this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if it does.
