Avengers: Endgame Theory Explains How Spider-Man Returns

Though time travel remains by far the most popular prediction on how the universe-wide Decimation of Avengers: Infinity War will be reversed in Avengers: Endgame, one opposing theory that occasionally makes the rounds is that the snapped victims were sent into an alternate reality. And in a recent Reddit post, an interesting new variation on the idea is offered that draws on clues from the recent Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer.

First off, it’s observed that the tone of the preview doesn’t really fit with the notion that the world is still reeling from a series of seismic events that saw the genocide and subsequent resurrection of half the universe’s population. And while there are a few possible explanations for this unusually lighthearted mood, Swayde620’s answer is that Peter, along with the other snap victims, may have reemerged in a new reality where history has taken a different course. As well as explaining why the likes of Nick Fury and Maria Hill are back, it’s argued that this would also tie in with Kevin Feige’s tease last year that the Far From Home title is “full of alternate meaning.”

Another point made in the post is that Mysterio being a hero is just the kind of backwards development you could only see in an alternate reality. And while many predict that Quentin Beck is merely tricking everyone into thinking he’s good, Swayde620 argues that this twist would be “too obvious” given the character’s villainous comic book history. Of course, predictable though this development may be, having Mysterio be a genuine hero would probably upset a lot of fans who’ve been waiting years to see him go face to face with Spidey on the big screen. Besides, surely a heroic Mysterio in a parallel universe can only work as a subversion of the norm if there’s already a villainous Mysterio in the original universe.

Overall, the evidence seems pretty thin for the theory, but we’ll see if there’s any truth to the speculation when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019, followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5th.
