I have to confess that new Avengers: Endgame trailer was a bit of a letdown. With the film now just over a month away, I was hungry to get a look at what’s coming down the line, only to find a promo mostly composed of scenes from previous movies with a color filter over the top. Oh well, at least the finished product hasn’t been spoiled too much.
That being said, there were a few things of note in the trailer, with perhaps the most significant being the apparent introduction of Kate Bishop to the MCU. She can be spotted at about the forty-second mark in the trailer, where we see Clint Barton training a young woman in archery.
In the comics, Bishop takes on the mantle of Hawkeye as a member of the Young Avengers. She debuted in 2005 and quickly became popular amongst fans, making it a common prediction by now that she’ll be introduced in the film. Alternatively, we could be wrong here and this woman might be Clint’s daughter Lila, who we saw as a girl in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s been a few years since that movie (and there seems to be a substantial post-Snap time skip after Infinity War), so this could be her just grown up a bit.
But then there’s the matter of Clint ditching the (relatively) friendly Hawkeye persona for the tortured and miserable Ronin. Something very bad has clearly happened to him, as proven by his choosing to get an absolutely ridiculous mohawk that has no place being on the head of a 48-year-old man.
It’s commonly theorized that this trauma is his beloved family being dusted in the Snap, which may rule out Lila. In any case, Clint becoming Ronin leaves the Hawkeye name vacant, and whoever this is will almost certainly occupy it at some point during the movie.
In addition, the look we get at the character in the Avengers: Endgame trailer seems to confirm that this is the role Katherine Langford was cast for. Marvel Studios have been very cagey about exactly who she’s playing, so I’d wager that the first confirmation we’ll get will be a leaked action figure or LEGO set. As always, watch this space for more.
