Avengers: Infinity War left the MCU in a dire state, but offered hope in its last-minute tease that Captain Marvel will be coming to the rescue in Avengers: Endgame. And now that the sequel’s first trailer has left us on a mini-cliffhanger of its own regarding our old friend Iron Man, some fans are suggesting once more that Carol Danvers is the solution.

The new teaser dedicates about two fifths of its runtime to a scene of Tony Stark adrift in space, as the hero monologues about food and water running out, and oxygen on the verge of depleting, too. Of course, unless directors Anthony and Joe Russo really intend to have this Phase 1 Avenger spend his final movie withering away in a broken down ship, it’s likely that Tony will find some way out of his situation, and one theory that’s already emerged is that help will arrive in the form of Captain Marvel.

There’s certainly some sense to this idea. After all, Brie Larson’s heroine is a space traveler herself, and after the distress signal that was sent at the end of Infinity War, she’ll likely be on course for Earth, which is also presumably where Stark is trying and failing to reach.

At the same time, this is some pretty thin evidence to base a theory on, especially when the internet has already offered alternatives. In particular, Stark’s mention of “zero promise of rescue” in his message to Pepper Potts has fueled speculation that Gwyneth Paltrow’s character will be the one to do the saving in her new Rescue persona.

In any case, we’ll find out how Tony is saved from death by lack of oxygen when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019, though not before Carol Danvers makes her MCU debut in Captain Marvel on March 8th.
