Avengers: Endgame Writers Address Possible Captain Marvel/War Machine Romance

Even the smallest moments of Avengers: Endgame are being plucked apart by fans who are desperate to work out the clues they're hiding about the future of the MCU. For instance, think back to the scene where Black Widow's coordinating the various heroes who are signing back in with her at Avengers HQ via hologram. Captain Marvel stays behind a beat longer than the others to wish War Machine "good luck." It's a small detail, sure, but some are theorizing that it could be hinting at a Carol Danvers/Rhodey romance, as per the duo's relationship in the comics.

ComicBook.com caught up with Endgame scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and asked them if this is something they intended when penning the scene in question. The pair resolutely answered that it wasn’t, but Markus said he was open to whatever developed in Phase Four and beyond, even if this wasn’t the intended subtext on this occasion.

“You mean when she says, “Good luck” to him? I mean … You know, you can ship anything you want. We’re aware of the comic book relationship, and should things develop in the future of the MCU, I’m all for it.”

McFeely then jokingly added: “Those crazy kids,” before Markus wrapped up the topic by clarifying: “It was not so much on the page.”

This isn’t too surprising. Just because a romance happened in the comics doesn’t mean it’s going to happen on screen. In any case, if the studio wanted to pair Captain Marvel up with another established MCU hero, the more popular option would be Valkyrie. As Carol’s sexuality hasn’t been established yet, many are hoping she might be the franchise’s first female LGBT lead. Plus, Tessa Thompson’s heroine was revealed to be bisexual in a deleted scene from Thor: Ragnarok.

Still, like Markus says, anything could happen in the future so we’ll have to see who – if anyone – Captain Marvel hooks up with post-Avengers: Endgame
