Marvel Reveals The MCU’s Official Name For Fat Thor

Fat Thor was one of the best things about Avengers: Endgame. His new portly appearance was a closely kept secret right up until release day, with promotional materials featuring his Avengers: Infinity War look and Chris Hemsworth remaining tight-lipped in interviews. His beery despondency and sudden loss of confidence were both touching and hilarious, with Hemsworth clearly relishing the opportunity to play a far more vulnerable Thor than we'd see on screen to date. I also loved that he didn't magically slim down for the climactic battle - remaining 'Fat Thor' even as he hurled himself at Thanos.

His beery despondency and sudden loss of confidence were both touching and hilarious, with the actor clearly relishing the opportunity to play a far more vulnerable Thor than we’d see on screen. I also loved that he didn’t magically slim down for the climactic battle, remaining Fat Thor even as he hurled himself at Thanos.

Perhaps recognizing this version of the character’s popularity, Marvel Studios has now revealed their official name for Fat Thor. This comes in the description of an upcoming special feature for the home video release, which says the following:

“His appearance has changed but his heroism remains! Go behind the scenes to see how Bro Thor was created.”

So, that’s goodbye to the slightly demeaning Fat Thor and hello to Bro Thor. For the record, I would also have accepted Lebowski Thor.

This new name is arguably an improvement though, as it doesn’t just describe Thor’s physical state but his mental one as well. It seems that with the destruction of almost everything he holds dear, combined with his failure to aim for the head, the God of Thunder chose to shirk all responsibility. In real terms, this meant hanging around in a dressing gown all day drinking beer and playing Fortnite with his buddies, a temptation I’m guessing many of us can relate to.

Sadly, I suspect that Thor will have lost the weight by his next appearance. I kinda hope he sticks with this look for a while though. After all, if Marvel Studios really are on a mission to increase representation in their films, it’d be awesome if one of their most powerful characters remained happy with his new physique. If nothing else, Avengers: Endgame‘s final battle proved that it’s certainly not getting in the way of his ass-kicking.
