Avengers: Infinity War Director Praises Benedict Cumberbatch For Dealing With Tom Holland

There’s an ominous (though ultimately subverted) moment in Avengers: Infinity War where Stephen Strange warns Tony Stark that if it ever comes down to saving him, Peter Parker, or the Time Stone, the Sorcerer Supreme wouldn’t hesitate to let his two new friends die. With that in mind, you have to wonder what lengths Benedict Cumberbatch would go to in order to prevent Tom Holland from dropping any major spoilers.

The Spider-Man actor has become notorious for his loose lips, to the point that the star of Doctor Strange seems to have made it his unofficial duty to preemptively stop Holland from saying too much. It’s an issue that came up in a recent Entertainment Tonight video featuring Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo. When the interviewer mentions that they’ve seen an online supercut of all the times Cumberbatch blocked his fellow Brit from divulging confidential information, Joe takes the opportunity to commend the Sherlock lead for his efforts.

“By the way, Benedict is a great partner for him on the press tour. Because Benedict is actually very good at dancing around spoilers — and monitoring Tom Holland.”

Of course, Cumberbatch can’t always be around to help put a lid on things, with the actor leading his own busy life of movie stardom and street-level crime-fighting, so it’s inevitable that Holland’s blabbermouth will sometimes go unchecked. Joe Russo, however, finds the young man to be too gosh darn likable to ever stay mad at him.

“What are you gonna do? You know. He’s the nicest guy in the world. So you can never be punitive towards Tom Holland.”

Both Peter Parker and Doctor Strange suffered a sad fate at the end of their last movie, but it’s a safe bet that both will be back for Avengers 4 on May 3rd, 2019. In the meantime, you can revisit Infinity War on Digital HD right now, and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD on August 14th.
