Avengers: Infinity War Co-Director Expresses Interest In Secret Wars Movie

When we think back to major crossover events to have been published in the 1980's, there are two that immediately spring to mind: DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths and Marvel's Secret Wars. Granted, the latter was meant to serve as a tie-in with a toyline, but that didn't diminish from how it remains one of the House of Ideas' most influential tales to this day. That said, we imagine Secret Wars being on the lips of a fair amount of True Believers when it comes to debates regarding where the Marvel Cinematic Universe should go following the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Personally, I think Secret Invasion is the next thing that Kevin Feige and company will and should be building toward, but that’s just me.

If you happen to be on the Secret Wars bandwagon though, it looks like you’re not alone, because Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo seems game for a live action adaptation. There is one catch, however, as he laid it out in a recent discussion with Linternaute:

“If Disney’s takeover of Fox ends, it’s a lot more characters to work with at once, it might be worth doing something like Secret Wars.”

From the sound of it, Russo wants to integrate the X-Men and Fantastic Four into such an epic, but it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker if he and his brother were forced to make do with the characters currently available to them. After all, it’s not often these pictures are 100% accurate to the source material, and Marvel Studios made everything work even before they had access to Spider-Man.

Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on April 27 and will forever change the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it does.
