On an unprecedented scale, Avengers: Infinity War brings together previously disparate parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on levels both obvious and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it subtle.
Just take this recently spotlighted example from the brief clash between Peter Quill and Tony Stark, which features a sly callback to our first encounter with Chris Pratt’s character, way back in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
As Reddit user GODSPEED320 points out, the little triangular device that Star-Lord uses to trap Iron Man is the same one used to contain the mysterious orb that features in the Guardians’ big screen debut. Better yet, a commenter on this post points out that the device is later utilized in an attempt to remove the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos’ hand. Now, if Star-Lord had only stayed this practical-minded in the heat of battle, maybe everyone wouldn’t be so mad at the poor guy.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 postponed indefinitely in the wake of the James Gunn controversy, actor Dave Bautista has suggested that the plot of Avengers 4 could be affected by the delay. Nonetheless, despite Quill, Drax, and their peers getting dusted in their last movie, Bautista has also assured us that they’ll definitely be in sequel, despite Disney trying to keep such spoilers under wraps.
“We definitely see more Guardians in the upcoming Avengers, which we’ve already shot. Oddly enough, I guess I wasn’t supposed to say anything, but I was already saying before Avengers 3 was released that I’d already filmed 4, and I was signed up for Guardians 3. I’ve shot scenes for it, so I must come back somehow.”
Evidently, Avengers: Infinity War wasn’t the last we’ll see of Star-Lord and the gang, but beyond the release of Avengers 4 on May 3rd, 2019, the future of their series remains uncertain.
