A few days ago, we were finally able to add Avengers: Infinity War to the prestigious list of movies to gross $2 billion worldwide – not that that came as much of a surprise, mind you.
In doing so, it became only the fourth feature film ever to surpass the $2 billion milestone, an honor it now shares with The Force Awakens, Titanic and the one true box office king, James Cameron’s Avatar, which is still somehow – almost inexplicably – in a league of its own at $2.78 billion. But the good news doesn’t end there.
Giving Kevin Feige and co. even more to smile about, we’re now learning that Joe and Anthony Russo’s event movie has passed Titanic on home turf. With a domestic haul of $660 million, it hopped over the aforementioned 1997 pic, which took in $659.3 million. That means Infinity War has clinched the number 4 spot on the North American charts, with Black Panther sitting one spot ahead of it in third.
Yes, at a whopping $699.5 million domestically, T’Challa still reigns supreme when it comes to Marvel movies stateside. Which is a hugely impressive feat considering it was the character’s debut film. But circling back to Avengers: Infinity War, and when you combine the aforementioned total with its $1.34 billion from overseas, that brings it to just over $2 billion globally which, as we mentioned above, it passed earlier this week.
And though Titanic still has it beat worldwide with a haul of $2.18 billion, take nothing away from the MCU’s latest outing. It was a tremendous success in every sense of the word and as its theatrical run begins to finish up now, all eyes will be on Avengers 4 to see if it can topple its predecessor.
