Avengers: Infinity War Stars Want More Spider-Man/Doctor Strange Team-Ups

Avengers: Infinity War is going to see many heroes from the various corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe unite for the first time. Already, we've heard that Thor, Rocket and Groot, Star-Lord and Iron Man and Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are going to be working together, among others. That last pairing, in particular, though looks like a lot of fun and, if the actors get their way, there could be a lot more of this team-up to come.

Screen Rant caught up with Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland this weekend and asked them whether they’d want to work together in future MCU movies. The pair were all over the idea, with Cumberbatch replying “definitely” and Holland adding that he’s “100%” on board with it.

The duo don’t even want a superhero partnership but rather, just want to see what their characters would get up to in their downtime. Holland, in particular, has a hilarious idea for a comic moment between the heroes.

Here’s what they had to say:

Cumberbatch: And even if it is, you know, doing a coffee run for one another or just like hanging out or we’ll go play ball in the park or it’s doing every day, start picking up our laundry. I would really like that to be expanded to something really fantastic.

Holland: I came up with an idea the other day that will never happen. Peter Parker is at school, has a mad, mad headache, rings up someone and says “I just really need your help. It’s really important.” And then a voice says “OK”, and then he goes over to your house and your dressed up as Doctor Strange and you’re ready to do business. And I’m like, “I have a headache. Do you know what this is?” And I, because you’re a brain surgeon so you think I need you to like save the world again, but really I just need your doctor expertise I just need you to be a doctor.

Spider-Man and Doctor Strange have a long history of teaming up in the comics, and it’s usually a lot of fun when it happens as the two characters are so different. Not only in their skillsets, but their personalities, as well. For instance, Peter’s youthful energy often gets on the nerve of the more serious-minded Sorcerer Supreme.

By the looks of things, this dynamic is going to be faithfully recreated for the MCU, too. One moment captured in the trailers shows us Spidey and Strange coming across one another for the first time. Peter accidentally insults his new ally as he assumes his name is “made-up,” leaving Strange looking disgruntled. It’s a great scene and there should be plenty more where it came from in the film itself, as the Russos have promised that Cumberbatch and Holland have “great chemistry” in Infinity War.

Given this, it doesn’t seem too unlikely that the heroes could fight side by side again in Phase Four. Who knows, maybe Doctor Strange will be Peter Parker’s new superhero mentor in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2? It’s already been revealed that Robert Downey Jr. won’t be returning as Iron Man, so there’s definitely an empty spot to fill. If not, then there should be a Doctor Strange 2 on the way, as well, though there’s certainly been some confusion over if it’ll actually happen. If it does, though, then maybe Tom Holland could turn up in that instead?

Regardless of what the future holds for them, we’ll get our first look at Spidey and Strange teaming up when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
