Is it too early to say that Avengers: Infinity War will be remembered as the cinematic success story of 2018? Perhaps.
But after 10 years and 18 movies’ worth of groundwork – Black Panther included – the current MCU culminated in one of the most audacious and jaw-dropping superhero spectacles ever to grace the big screen. And it’s fair to say that audiences from all over the world have been flocking to see Infinity War in their droves.
So much so, in fact, that at $641 million worldwide, Avengers 3 now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend in film history – both domestic and overseas – easily surpassing the respective totals of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Fate of the Furious.
Such a historic feat hasn’t gone unnoticed, either, after Thanos and soon-to-be Deadpool 2 star Josh Brolin took to Instagram in order to raise a glass to the Marvel community for their continued support, while Marvel chief Kevin Feige has shared a similarly heartfelt message via Twitter, which reads as so:
To the greatest fans. The past 10 years have been an unforgettable ride and we couldn’t have done it without the entire team at Marvel Studios, our incredible talent in front of and behind the camera, the visionary comic book creators, but most importantly…you.
Feige continued:
Thank you for embracing these characters and stories since we kicked off the MCU ten years ago. This past weekend was a result beyond our wildest dreams. On behalf of everyone here at Marvel Studios, we thank you for being the best fans in the universe and making Avengers: Infinity War the biggest opening weekend of all time.
Proving there’s still life after Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios is already preparing for the summer release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, with tomorrow expected to herald a brand new trailer featuring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly as the titular, crime-fighting duo.
