You’re familiar with the Goddess of Death, but what about the personification of Death?
It’s a character with whom Thanos shared a pretty intimate relationship all throughout Marvel’s The Infinity Gauntlet comic, culminating in his vow to wipe out half of the universe. However, when it comes to Avengers: Infinity War, things are a little different.
Indeed, as co-writer Stephen McFeely explained to ComingSoon, both he and Christopher Markus decided early on that Thanos’ love story won’t be carried over onto the big screen, as it’s “not something that brings you closer to his motivation.”
At the very beginning, just because it’s such a focal point of the comics, we talked about it, but I think pretty quickly… it is not something that brings you closer to his motivation.
That’s all well and good, but considering that Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan has been angled to be Infinity War‘s pseudo-protagonist, comic book enthusiasts will be a little disappointed to learn that the entire Thanos/Death love story has been left by the wayside.
McFeely continued:
It’s not something where the average moviegoer says, ‘Now I can kinda empathize with him because he’s in love with Death!’ But I think we took that passion that he has… he really is in love with Death in the comics! He’s a lovelorn, kinda sad little fella. We wanted to maintain that level of emotion on his part, just redirected.
To his credit, the idea that Thanos wanted to obliterate half of the universe in order to woo Death may have resulted in Avengers: Infinity War feeling a little clichéd – from what we understand the Mad Titan’s true motivation will involve a last-ditch attempt to save the ailing world of Titan.
And we’ll be able to see that story play out on the big, big screen this Friday, April 27th. Just remember, Thanos demands your silence.
