In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos will finally step out of the shadows and take on the combined forces of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. After various teaser appearances and cameos dating all the way back to 2012’s The Avengers, there’s a lot of hype for the Mad Titan and he’s all set to be the biggest, baddest enemy the heroes of the Marvel universe have ever faced. We’re sure that the titular team will ultimately be able to take him down, but they’re certainly going to have a tough time doing so.
Not only will Thanos have the Black Order there to help him, but he’ll also be in possession of the incredibly powerful Infinity Gauntlet, which will be fully equipped by the time the film rolls around. It’ll essentially allow the uber villain to wreak havoc and do just about anything he wants, which means he’s definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with. So, just how will Earth’s Mightiest Heroes defeat him then? Well, that remains to be seen, but they may have found their secret weapon in the most unlikely individual: Mantis.
Yes, Pom Klementieff’s breakout character from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could be key in taking down the mighty Thanos. How, you ask? Well, we already know that she has strong empathic abilities, which allow her to feel the emotions of anyone she’s made physical contact with. Furthermore, as ComicBook.com points out, she also harnessed her powers by “putting the Celestial Ego (Kurt Russell) to sleep, as she could affect his consciousness in ways that even he couldn’t control.”
So, the latest fan theory goes that perhaps since Mantis isn’t much of a physical fighter, we may instead see her get close enough to the Mad Titan to put him to sleep. Thus giving the Avengers an opportunity to gain the upper hand, as they really are no match for Thanos when he’s fully awake, alert and all powered up. From there, we’re unsure of what they’d do, but if we have to be honest, we’re not really buying into this.
For one, we’re not sure if Mantis would be able to put an immensely powerful being like Thanos to sleep, even despite her abilities. Not only that, but like we mentioned above, she needs to have made physical contact with the individual to feel their emotions. This means she’ll have had to have touched the Mad Titan at some point, and it’s difficult to see a situation in which she’d be able to get close enough to him to do that. Besides, it’d be strange to give Mantis, who’s not one of the major characters here, such a pivotal part to play in the proceedings. But who knows? Right now we can’t say anything for certain as so little is known about the film.
One way or another though, we’ll find out soon enough, as after 10 years and 17 movies worth of build-up – Black Panther notwithstanding – Avengers: Infinity War is prepped and ready to deliver a huge climax on May 4th, 2018. Select international countries, including the United Kingdom, will welcome Marvel’s sequel a little early, which only highlights the continuing importance of the overseas box office.
