Transformers Scribe To Tackle Batgirl For Warner Bros.

Christina Hodson, best known for her credits on Bumblebee and Birds of Prey, has been tasked with writing Warner's standalone Batgirl movie.

From Bumblebee to Batgirl, it looks like Christina Hodson has secured her next writing gig. And it’s a doozy.

Per Deadline, Warner Bros. has officially tapped the so-hot-right-now screenwriter to pen a script for the embryonic spinoff movie, which initially had Joss Whedon (The Avengers) attached to write, direct and produce.

As the title suggests, the standalone flick will open up the playing field for Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon, who is undoubtedly one of the most established female heroes of the DC world. Exactly who will pick up the mantle as Batgirl remains to be seen, though it’s worth noting that Janelle Monáe (Moonlight, Hidden Figures) has emerged as something of a fan-favorite in recent months. For Hodson, this is another exciting project to add to her growing collection. Indeed, ever since she broke onto the scene four years ago, her work has appeared on Hollywood’s famous Black List three times, while she’s already cut her teeth on DC material after agreeing to pen Birds of Prey, a Harley Quinn-centric spinoff that was tentatively announced in the midst of Suicide Squad – ditto for Gotham City Sirens, though David Ayer’s female-fronted offshoot appears to be much further along in development.

Nevertheless, this is a big step forward for Warner’s troubled Batgirl movie, so we’re hopeful that the project can begin to gain a sense of momentum from this point on. Next up for the DC Extended Universe is the launch of Aquaman in December, when Arthur Curry will be busy battling off Alita: Battle Angel and Bumblebee: The Movie for the box office crown.
