UPDATE: Zack Snyder has just confirmed the news at Comic-Con. You can check out the official logo for the film below.
Now here’s something to put into your pipe and try to smoke: it appears that Warner Brothers are not going follow Man Of Steel with Man Of Steel 2, as we initially thought. Instead, they’re going to go for broke and put Batman and Superman in the same movie.
According to the L.A. Times’ Hero Complex blog, WB plans to announce the team-up film today at Comic-Con instead of Man Of Steel 2, with a 2015 release date in mind. Zack Snyder will return to directing duties for the film, along with screenwriter David S. Goyer (who also co-wrote the Dark Knight films with Christopher Nolan). It’s unclear right now what part Nolan himself will play in the production and while Henry Cavill will certainly reprise his role as Superman, we should not expect to see Christian Bale putting the cowl back on for Batman. He’s pretty much nipped that idea in the bud.
This announcement puts the question of Justice League into sharp relief. Warner Bros’ initial plan was to roll out Man Of Steel 2 (we thought) and then Justice League. After that they were going to go into the spin-off character films. Now it appears that they’ll bring Superman and Batman together first, as a sort of build-up to the team movie of Justice League? All right. That sounds like it could work.
This is an intriguing idea and could be more successful for the studio than if they just jumped straight into the ensemble of Justice League. For those of you who paid really close attention to Man Of Steel, the presence of Bruce Wayne would come as no surprise. A Batman/Superman film would help to introduce the heroes to each other, and presumably introduce the audience to whoever the new Batman is. Then we can all relax and enjoy Justice League, if they ever get around to it.
What do you think about the Batman/Superman plans? Great idea or has WB lost their marbles?
