Batman V Superman And Beyond: What To Expect From The DCEU

If there is a single, universal truth, it is surely that everything is connected. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just as our own daily lives intersect and impact upon each other, so does artistic output – and when it comes to the fledgling DC Extended Universe, artistic output is key. Comic books have long been appreciated as the very specific art form that they are, but when the art of comic books is married with the art of filmmaking, something truly magical is born. While we have been enjoying that marriage between Marvel comic books and Marvel Studios for almost a decade now, it is the DC cinematic adaptations that are currently getting fans hot under the collar.

David Ayer’s comic book team-up of a very different kind will see DC supervillains undertake black ops missions for a secret government agency. Suicide Squad is based upon the DC comic book series of the same name, created by John Ostrander, and features the characters of Harley Quinn, Deadshot, The Joker, Enchantress, Rick Flagg, Killer Croc, Slipknot, El Diablo and Katana – all operating under the supervision of Amanda Waller, out of their base in Belle Reve Penitentiary. With the promise of clemency, Waller has the group of dangerous criminals mete out a different kind of justice.

But, this is now a cohesive cinematic universe – so how does Suicide Squad tie in to the bigger picture? Evidently, it hinges on Batman, for the most part. Each of the supervillains holds a personal vendetta against The Dark Knight, because he is largely responsible for their respective incarcerations. But, the resentment is not one-sided.

Batman is no fan of the idea of a group of supervillains running around the city, essentially doing his job – especially not those that he has already apprehended once or more. In the comic books, Amanda Waller is seen to threaten Batman/ Bruce Wayne with exposure if he refuses to leave her charges to their assignments – and so, another epic conflict is set in motion.
