James Gunn Eyeing Another MCU Star For The Suicide Squad’s Villain

The cast for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is slowly but surely coming together. Some of Task Force X will be made up of anti-villains inherited from David Ayer's 2016 movie - Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis as organ grinder Amanda Waller - while the new recruits the director's brought on board for his sequel are Idris Elba (as Deathstroke?) and John Cena (Peacemaker?).

According to Geeks Worldwide though, we might now know who the supercriminal team will be facing in the film. GWW claims that Benicio del Toro is the top choice to play the movie’s villain, known only as The Mayor at present. This seems to be a codename used to keep the foe’s DC Comics moniker a secret. GWW’s got hold of a brief character description though, which calls The Mayor “an irascible old warrior who lives for war.”

This is pretty interesting, as previous reports have pointed to The Suicide Squad featuring an alien female main antagonist. Assuming both pieces of info are correct, it’s possible that this Mayor may be a minion of the aforementioned extraterrestrial evil. That’s all we can theorize right now though as we know so little about the plot.

If cast, del Toro will be the third MCU star Gunn’s brought with him for his hop over to the Distinguished Competition and the second who previously worked with the writer/director on Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn’s longtime collaborator Michael Rooker is said to be playing King Shark in the movie, while Ant-Man‘s David Dastmalchian has signed on to play Polka-Dot Man.

With shooting due to start this fall, more on The Suicide Squad should come to light soon. In the meantime, the sequel is shaping up to be an exciting prospect that could put the franchise back on track. Fingers crossed, eh?
