New Birds Of Prey Set Photos Tease Ewan McGregor’s Black Mask

By now, we’ve seen a pretty generous supply of set photos from the upcoming Birds of Prey, presenting the likes of Harley Quinn, Huntress and Black Canary as they wander through the streets of Gotham. But while we’re starting to get a clear idea of how most of the heroines will look in Cathy Yan’s film, the villainous Black Mask has stayed fairly mysterious.

Granted, the teaser that came out exactly a month ago today offered an early glimpse of Ewan McGregor in the role of Roman Sionis, but the actual mask that gives the character his name was nowhere to be seen, and the star has been absent from set material ever since. These latest photos, shared to the DC Cinematic subreddit page, are no exception, but they do at least hint at his presence with the inclusion of a Janus Cosmetics logo in the background. From the look of things, Harley is jumping out of a truck that’s headed for the headquarters of Black Mask’s company.

No doubt Birds of Prey will be taking us inside those grounds and into the lair of Roman Sionis. From what we’ve heard already, the Gotham City crime lord is going to pose a threat to the young Cassandra Cain, played by Ella Jay Basco, prompting Harley, Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to assemble in an effort to protect her.

Beyond that, details on Black Mask’s role in the story remain vague, but with filming expected to wrap around mid-April, there’s still plenty of time for this production to yield further set material. Either way, we’ll see how Harley and her new friends fare against the criminal mastermind when Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.
