In between shots of Robbie dressed in an appropriately Bird-like manner, the footage seems to tease the DCEU debuts of Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. Nonetheless, Harley is the clear star of the footage, and while Robbie herself has previously described the flick as a “girl gang film,” it’s currently looking like the Clown Princess of Crime will be at the forefront of the ensemble action to a greater extent than in her last team-up flick, Suicide Squad.

Not only is Harley singled out by name in the film’s lengthy title, but writer Christina Hodson stated her intentions earlier this month to establish the antihero as an entertaining character beyond her connections to the Joker, telling Variety that she “doesn’t have to be in anyone’s shadow.” A Fantabulous Emancipation indeed.

After the mixed response received by Suicide Squad, many are turning to Birds of Prey in the hope that Cathy Yan can deliver the Harley Quinn movie that fans have been waiting for, and if the film performs as well as hoped, then you can expect Warner Bros. to make a DCEU fixture out of the character, with Robbie already teasing possibilities for further screen outings. We’ll find out if the producer/actress has the momentum follow through on her ideas once Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.
