Black Panther‘s reign at the global box office may be long over by this point, but the film is still chugging along, believe it or not, and is about to reach for the $700 million mark on home turf. That’s wildly impressive (especially since Infinity War won’t even hit it), and with T’Challa’s standalone outing currently sitting at $699.1 million at the time of writing, it’ll arrive there soon enough.
An Afrocentric epic years in the making, Black Panther first took center stage back in February, when his solo adventure dominated global box office charts on its journey to a huge tally which now stands at $1.34 billion when taking into account the aforementioned $699.1 million in North America and $646.2 million overseas.
Critics gushed about the movie, too, describing it as a breath of fresh air in a franchise that’s since passed its 10-year milestone. And that’s just it. Part of its global success can be traced back to the film’s ability to stand out from the superhero crowd, and one need only look to the cries of “Wakanda forever!” echoing around the Internet for evidence of Black Panther‘s impact.
You can now take the movie home on Blu-ray and DVD, too, as it’s currently available on home video (order here) replete with scores of extras, deleted scenes and special features – just don’t hold your breath for an extended cut. And as for what the future holds? Well, things certainly look good.
A direct sequel is almost a guarantee at this stage – but not until director Ryan Coogler is ready to return – while T’Challa is also expected to be back on our screens for Avengers 4. Sure, he may not be amongst the living at the moment, but we’re fairly certain that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will find a way to bring all their friends back next May.
