Black Widow And Hawkeye’s Avengers: Endgame Reunion Had A Hidden Meaning

As we’ve reported on before, the MCU has, arguably, dropped the ball when it comes to Black Widow. Both Nat and Clint are the only original Avengers who haven’t gotten their own movie, though that’s being remedied with a standalone Black Widow film due out next year and a Hawkeye TV show set to debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform. Still, while he won’t be getting his own pic, everyone’s favorite bow and arrow expert got plenty of character development across Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the MCU, though the same can’t be said for Black Widow.

As a result, her death in Avengers: Endgame might not have resonated as strongly as it should’ve. It seems the film’s creative team has recognized their mistakes though and it turns out, they tried to build on Clint and Nat’s relationship during their recent reunion.

As ComicBook.com reports, the commentary track for Endgame reveals that directors Joe and Anthony Russo and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had a very specific reason for sending Black Widow to confront Hawkeye/Ronin in Tokyo, during his violent rampage against the criminal underworld.

“There’s no one who could have pulled him out of this other than her,” says Joe. “No one else shows up and gets him to come home. ”

“Well it’s also…It’s implied that this is essentially what he did for her when he pulled her out of being a Russian Agent,” adds Markus.

“That’s right it comes full circle, their relationship. Right? ‘Cause he had an opportunity to kill her and he changed her life, and now here she is – changing his,” Joe concludes.

Of course, they’re referencing Nat’s past as a Russian spy and assassin, and the mission where Hawkeye was ordered to kill her. Instead, he saw that she was capable of so much more, and decided to recruit her and bring her back to S.H.I.E.L.D. To put it simply, Black Widow was rescued by Clint, and she returned the favor years later during Endgame.
