Since there weren’t already enough mutants set to appear in X-Men: Apocalypse, we can now add one more to the list in the form of Fred Dukes, aka The Blob. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the character appeared back in X-Men: Origins Wolverine and was played by Kevin Durand, who wore a fat suit for the role.

This time around, The Blob will reportedly arrive in the form of a 540 pound, unnamed French-Canadian man. We don’t know how the supervillain will factor into the plot just yet, but in the comics he was depicted as an “obese circus freak” who claimed he was “immovable.” His extreme body mass grants him superhuman strength and he often used his powers to carry out tasks for the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Given all the characters that are already set to feature in X-Men: Apocalypse, and given that we’re hearing about The Blob so late into production, I can’t imagine that he’ll have a very large role here. And that’s fine by me. There’s enough going on in the film as it is, we don’t really need anymore characters and/or subplots muddying the waters.

Still, it will be nice to see another familiar face show up, and I’m definitely curious to see how The Blob is used in the story once X-Men: Apocalypse hits theatres on May 27th, 2016.
