Horror franchise crossovers aren’t exactly high cinema, but we love ’em. Freddy vs Jason, Alien vs Predator, and Sadako vs. Kayako are never going to trouble any all-time top ten lists, though they provide a whole bunch of goofy fun as to villains that probably shouldn’t meet cross blades/claws and tear chunks out of one another.
But Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum isn’t sure whether Insidious and Sinister should ever share a screen. This project was once in development, though apparently nobody could figure out a good reason why these two worlds should cross over
Speaking to CinePOP, he said:
“I think it would be fun, but we need to find the right story. We developed it for a while, like you said, you’re right, we developed it for a while, but we could never think of a big movie. And I didn’t want to do one movie just to combine the two franchises. I wanted to make a movie that felt really good. We never had a great idea, but I’m up for it.”
So the door is still just about open for this to happen one day. Here’s hoping there’s a talented screenwriting mixologist out there who can make this horror mash-up sing.
In the meantime, Insidious fans aren’t going to be left in the cold. Insidious: The Red Door hits theaters in a week’s time, which sees franchise stalwart Patrick Wilson taking the directorial range. Wilson reprises the role of Josh Lambert, though the story will focus on his son Dalton, as played by Ty Simpkins. Trouble begins when Dalton is dropped off at college, only to find demons returning from the past.
Further into the distance is Thread: An Insidious Tale from Moon Knight‘s Jeremy Slater, though we don’t have too many firm details on that other than it’ll star Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore.
Sadly Sinister aficionados aren’t getting the same love. So far the franchise consists of just Sinister and 2015’s Sinister 2. Here’s hoping there are more chills on the horizon.
Insidious: The Red Door is released on July 7.
