Blumhouse Doesn’t Have The Rights To Make Halloween Sequels Yet

After bringing us easily the most critically - and commercially - well-received movie in the franchise in a long while, it seems like the question about further Halloween sequels coming from Blumhouse is more of a when rather than an if. Founder Jason Blum has previously said, after all, that he's extremely keen to get yet another return for Michael Myers off the ground, but it seems there's a pretty big obstacle preventing that from happening right now: the production company doesn't currently have the rights to make another sequel.

While speaking with MovieFone, Blum reaffirmed his intention to make more Halloween films, even going so far as to say that if it were up to him, then he’d serve up another 10. Though he seems positive about his future with the franchise, then, he also explained that a deal to allow Blumhouse to produce more movies hasn’t been finalized.

“We had talked about it but right now we’re not shooting any Halloween movies right now because we don’t have deal rights to the sequels. But I certainly hope to make 10 more but I’ll start with one more.”

While they don’t have the rights at the moment, surely all the chips are in Blumhouse’s favor. Not only did they make a financially successful picture, but they also have the support of creator John Carpenter and the previous film left things pretty open for a sequel. That being said, ten more movies might be a bit of a tall ask, but we’ll happily take at least a couple more.

After all, by the looks of things, Blumhouse is all ready to go. Writer Scott Teems has reportedly been hired to pen the script for a follow-up, while leading ladies Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer and Andi Matichak are all expected to return. Perhaps if things get going soon, we can even have a new Halloween sequel out in time for October 2020. Fingers crossed, eh?
