Box Office Report: Furious 7 Speeds To April Record

It was full speed ahead for Furious 7, which obliterated the April record at the North American box office with one of the biggest debuts of all time. The sixth sequel to The Fast and the Furious opened to an eye-popping $143.6 million, the ninth largest opening in domestic box office history. That was about 50% higher than Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which earned $95 million to take the monthly record on this weekend last year.

There were other titles out in theatres over the holiday weekend. Dropping to second place was the 3D animated comedy Home, which tumbled 47% despite having the advantage of Good Friday, when kids are out of school. The film earned an estimated $27.4 million, to up the total to $95.6 million. Past DreamWorks hits How To Train Your Dragon and The Croods dropped just 34% and 39%, respectively, over the sophomore holiday weekend, suggesting that Home may have been more front-loaded than initially expected. Still, without too much competition over the next month, expect Home to reach at least $175 million domestically.

With Furious 7‘s behemoth debut, Get Hard plummeted 62% to third place, taking in $12.9 million. With mixed word-of-mouth, the comedy starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart has almost no chance of reaching the $100 million mark. With $57 million after 10 days, a total of around $80 to 85 million is expected. However, with a co-star like Ferrell, Warner Bros. probably expected a bit more bang for their buck. Still, by next weekend, the film should surpass Hart hits The Wedding Ringer ($64.4 million) and Think Like a Man Too ($65.2 million).

Two female-skewing March hits rounded out the Top Five. Cinderella brought in $10.3 million in its fourth weekend, dropping 40%, bringing its domestic total to a strong $167.3 million. For a few days, the Disney flick will have the title of 2015’s highest-grossing film. (Furious 7 should have that crown by Thursday.) The film will likely also flirt with the $200 million mark before it closes.

Meanwhile, Insurgent continued to lose ground on its predecessor, dropping a hefty 54% in its third frame. The film brought in $10 million and is currently running about $11 million behind Divergent. A finish near $130 million is probable for the young adult adaptation.

With a solid debut in seventh place was historical drama Woman in Gold, making $2 million from just 254 cinemas. (It has earned $2.1 million since a limited start on Wednesday.) The Helen Mirren-Ryan Reynolds drama benefitted from little competition for mature audiences in theaters now. The Weinstein Company title will likely expand in the coming weeks.
