Box Office Report: Rio Revives Slow Box Office With $40 Million

It should come as no surprise that Rio is the number one movie this weekend while slasher thriller Scream 4 was forced to take a back seat. Hop fell into third, while Soul Surfer stayed in fourth for its second weekend in a row. Rounding out the top 5, Hanna fell into fifth, but only lost a modest amount of its business since its debut last week. Overall the box office saw a 16.6 percent change in business since last week. It should be interesting to see if Water for Elephants, Madea’s Big Happy Family, and Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold can continue the box office streak when they make their theatrical debuts on April 22nd.

As expected, the Fox computer animated comedy Rio took the number one spot with an estimated $40 million, averaging $10,455 in 3,826 theaters. The film has also performed well internationally grossing $79.9 million in its second weekend. Obviously high 3D ticket prices contributed to the $40 million opening.

Although it didn’t meet the mid-twenties range that studio executives were hoping for, Scream 4 opened in second place with a modest $19.2 million, averaging $5,833 in 3,305 theaters.

After spending two weeks in the number one spot, Hop fell into third place with approximate $11.1 million, losing about 47.6 percent of its business since last week. The live action animated hybrid has grossed $82.6 million in 17 days and cost only $63 million to produce.

Soul Surfer continues to produce strong numbers as it raked in a strong $7.2 million for a total of $20 million in its first 10 days. Rounding out the top five is Hanna with $7.3 million, taking its ten-day run to a grand total of $23 million.
