Working Title has rolled out our first look at long-anticipated sequel Bridget Jones’ Baby proving that, yes, even after all these years, Renee Zellweger’s endearing protagonist is still a hopeless romantic.

Ready to pen a new life chapter, the footage finds Bridget Jones working at a new job as a “top news producer.” Such a career move meant packing in plans for a happily ever after with who we assume to be Colin Firth’s returning Mark Darcy. But make no mistake, the pair’s on-again, off-again relationship will still very much play into Sharon Maguire’s 2016 feature.

Threatening to throw a spanner in the works is Patrick Dempsey’s impossibly good-looking American, Jack, who may or may not be the father of Bridget’s unborn child. Hinting at some of those mysterious in an interview with Entertainment Weekly was Colin Firth, who teased that our bumbling lead may yet find her happy ever after.

“Who does she end up with? Whose baby is it? You can resolve one and make the other a question. Those are things which might not be revealed until very later on. I rather like it. It’s not often you have something where you have the possibility of keeping a surprise.”

Universal Pictures and Working Title are behind the long-awaited rom-com sequel, which will once again be based on Helen Fielding’s bestselling book series. Pitched as less The Edge of Reason and more of a journey back to what made Bridget Jones such a sleeper hit in the first place, Zellweger’s lead will be bound for the big screen once more come September.

Renee Zellweger will find herself at the centre of a new love triangle when Bridget Jones’ Baby opens on September 18. To get acquainted with the leading players in Bridget’s latest escapade, check out the gallery of images below (via EW):
