Bryan Cranston has shown himself to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, but it’s easy to forget that the guy who immortalized Walter White on Breaking Bad is also a damn fine comedian. He’s trying to remind us of that with the upcoming Why Him?, alongside James Franco, but he may also be returning to his comedic roots with a potential film adaptation of the TV show Malcolm in the Middle.
During a recent AMA on Reddit, Cranston fielded questions about the possibility of a big screen version of Malcolm in the Middle. While he doesn’t give any details, it does sound like there’s been some discussion about it recently.
Here’s what the actor said:
“There has been some conversation about that. I don’t know if or when that could happen, I guess we have to gauge the temperament of the fans to see if its something they want. But maybe. It would be fun to play with all those people again. It would be like if you (JF) did a Freaks and Geeks movie -bc”
It’s an intriguing premise, certainly. All of the kids from Malcolm in the Middle are grown up now, of course, so one would imagine that a film would encompass them later in life as a big screen sequel. TV shows developing sequels many years later is nothing new, though they have had varying degrees of success – we need only look at the recent Gilmore Girls sequel or Arrested Development.Â
Malcolm in the Middle was a successful show, and so a big screen sequel (or a small screen one, for that matter) would probably get at least as much attention as those series have. As long as they manage to get the whole cast back together, and have a decent script, this could be a great success.
Cranston is obviously not waiting around for a Malcolm in the Middle movie to develop, but it sounds like he’s at least interested. His next film, Why Him?, will be hitting theatres this week on December 23rd and you can check out our own review right here.
