Avengers: Infinity War is set to build on the interesting dynamic between T’Challa, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes that was first explored in Captain America: Civil War. Though they came to blows initially, by the end of the movie they were on the same terms, as Steve took his friend to Wakanda to be cured by their advanced sciences. But what’s next in the relationship between Captain America and Black Panther?
As part of their Hulk-sized coverage of the event movie, EW chatted with stars Chris Evans and Chadwick Boseman to get some insider info on Infinity War. First off, Boseman was asked about the connection between the two superheroes and the Black Panther actor was quick to point out that their shared history with vibranium immediately gives them a link.
“[Cap’s] shield was already made from vibranium anyway. So it’s just an extension of what he already had. This time, actually giving it to him, as opposed to… Me actually giving it to him is a testament to our relationship and trust. They trust each other.”
Sticking with the subject of Wakanda, Danai Gurira – who plays Okoye in both Black Panther and Infinity War – briefly touched on the subject of how the once secretive African nation is adjusting to being outed to the rest of the globe. She hinted that the people of Wakanda will be scared by the change but will come to accept it.
“Change is scary. But I think the learning curve is to become a citizen of the world versus a citizen of Wakanda.”
Finally, Captain America himself had something to say about how Steve’s friendship with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has developed since we last saw them flee from the law as fugitives at the end of Civil War. He teased that the duo have had to rely on each other, which has “reinforced” their partnership.
“It’s always felt like Natasha uses her cynicism as a defense mechanism. She weaponizes it for survival. I think Steve is a little newly calloused in the ways of the world. But Natasha is always going to be a couple steps ahead of him in terms of experience and knowledge. They’ve leaned on each other for different reasons. It’s reinforced the friendship.”
Of course, these are just a few of the dynamics that will be explored in the movie. Robert Downey Jr., for example, has talked about how Tony will team up with Doctor Strange, while new evidence points to unlikely duos such as Nebula and Scarlet Witch. Suffice it to say, there’s much to look forward to when Avengers: Infinity War storms theaters next month.
