Captain Marvel 2 Will Set Up Secret Invasion With The Kree

Captain Marvel featured a big twist that blew Marvel fans away. In a subversion of the comics, the Skrulls were revealed to not be the villains the Kree painted them as and were depicted as innocents. This was a smart move that had some topical things to say about immigration and tolerance, but it did raise questions about how the MCU would tackle the Skrulls' most famous storyline, Secret Invasion.

We Got This Covered has heard that Marvel has an idea to get around this, though. We’ve been informed that Captain Marvel 2 will set up a secret invasion of Earth by the Kree, not the Skrulls. The sequel will apparently be set mostly in the present day and will be another cosmic movie for the most part, though some of it will take place on Earth and deal with how those Kree that appear human are trying to conquer the planet from within.

Fans had already started theorizing that this could be the direction the franchise was going in after a throwaway line in Spider-Man: Far From Home. If you’ll recall, Nick Fury was heard to mention at one point in the movie that there are Kree sleeper cells on Earth. We’ve previously suggested this could be a bit of foreshadowing for Captain Marvel 2 and now this info backs that up.

There might be some mixed reactions to this news though as replacing the Kree with the Skrulls in a Secret Invasion adaptation would remove arguably the most interesting aspect of the storyline – that any character we thought we trusted might actually be a shapeshifting alien in disguise. Some of the Kree can pass for human, but they can’t assimilate someone’s features like the Skrulls. That said, the core idea of the plot, aliens invading the world without us realizing, can still be achieved.

In any case, fingers crossed we get some official news on Captain Marvel 2 from Marvel’s big Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 20th.
