Much like its prolonged hunt for Carol Danvers, one that ended with the casting of Room breakout Brie Larson, Marvel Studios is slowly but surely narrowing its search for a director to take the reins on Captain Marvel.

That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, claiming that Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Lorene Scafaria have found their way onto the shortlist for the high-profile directing gig. Whether or not their addition effectively rules out the likes of Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Jennifer Yuh (Kung Fu Panda 2) is up for question, but next up for Marvel now will be presenting each of these alleged candidates with an early treatment of the script.

Speaking of which, it is Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) who are currently hashing out the script for Captain Marvel‘s silver screen bow. It’s an origin story that is set to undergo “a lot of reinvention,” according to Perlman.

“There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And she’s also her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel films and make sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off, it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

Joe and Anthony Russo are remaining mum about the possibility of Captain Marvel making her big-screen debut via 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. But don’t rule that one out just yet, particularly when you consider just how great Tom Holland’s bit-part in Civil War proved to be.

Larson’s standalone pic is expected to land on March 8, 2019.
