New Captain Marvel Art Parodies Wonder Woman 1984

2019 will see the battle of the superheroines, as Marvel and DC both release hotly anticipated movies starring their toughest leading ladies. First, March heralds the debut of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. Then, in November, Gal Gadot's Amazonian princess returns in her very own sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Funnily enough, there are actually certain similarities between the premises of the two films. Both are set in the recent(ish) past and fill in the character’s backstory, as well as giving the franchise the chance to explore that period of time. Wonder Woman 1984‘s title speaks for itself while Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s.

The connection between the productions is captured in this fun piece of fan art for the Brie Larson-led flick. Based on the recently released image from Wonder Woman 1984, which features Diana staring at a bank of TV screens which capture the world of the 1980s, the artwork below sees Carol Danvers looking at a range of broadcasts from the 1990s, including Friends, Star Trek: The Next Generation, a Tamagotchi commercial and more.

By being set in the 90s, Captain Marvel will also explore an important part in the lives of two of the MCU’s longest-running characters: Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson. The movie will see the two fan favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives meeting a superhero for the first time. In Fury’s case, it’ll also likely add some context to the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War, which featured the character sending an S.O.S. to Carol.

Again, much like Wonder Woman’s a genuine goddess, Captain Marvel is being touted as the most powerful hero we’ve yet seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jackson recently called her just that, while other reports state that the character will be able to move entire planets. This fits in with what’s been said about her leading the MCU from Phase Four onwards, and we can’t wait to see what the studio’s got in store.
