With unarguably the biggest superhero movie of all time dominating the comic book airwaves with its impending April 27th release, you might’ve missed (not bloody likely) yesterday’s debut of a new trailer for Deadpool 2.
Full of inventive vulgarity, kickass action and our best look at Josh Brolin’s Cable yet, amongst the meta references in the sequel’s latest red-band trailer, there’s something that possibly whipped right past you like a speeding bullet from the mercenary’s gun.
At roughly the 1:28 mark, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) can be seen spinning about in a motorized wheelchair that belongs to none other than Charles Xavier, leader of the X-Men. While it isn’t the only reference to the beloved mutants in the trailer, it’s certainly the funniest.
Portrayed on the big screen by both James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart, the latter has stated, rather famously, that he would only return to the role, having wrapped up his tenure in last year’s Logan, if it were alongside the Merc with a Mouth.
“I would have said yes [to being done in the role]. But the discussion just now about Deadpool makes me think, well, maybe there is a proper justification for the revival of Charles Xavier.” Stewart said.
Speculation has been buzzing as of late due to the film’s ongoing reshoots to add in a “secret cameo.” That, coupled with Stewart’s comments and this moment from the trailer has people thinking that the cameo might be from none other than Professor X. It’s a stretch, sure, but fans will no doubt continue to speculate about it right up until release.
Speaking of which, Wade Wilson will officially return to our screens on May 18th, at which point, you can readily expect Deadpool 2 to lay the groundwork for the upcoming X-Force crossover movie, directed by Drew Goddard.
