So far we’ve only been granted a small glimpse of Tom Hooper‘s upcoming adaptation of Les Misérables, but you can check out the latest trailer – in all its glory – below. “Do you hear the people sing?” Well, we can definitely hear Russell Crowe in this chunk of footage.

This time around we’re treated to samples of six or seven songs, including “I Dreamed A Dream” and “Castle On A Cloud”. More importantly (because it’s absolutely the best song), there’s a large section of Act II climax classic “One Day More!” to relish.

Hooper has definitely made a wise decision in making this a sweeping epic with regards to the production of this movie. He’s shot it unlike most adapted musicals, with neat camera angles and proper cinematic framing. Many musicals that find themselves transformed into films are shot face-on, as if you’re still watching it from the seat of the theatre. Blah.

It’s also interesting to note that the actors didn’t perform their songs in a studio but on the actual set. Wacky, I know. And just look at those battle sequences: sure to impress, no doubt.

For those who don’t know, Les Misérables is based on the 19th century novel by Victor Hugo, and tells the story of Jean Valjean (badass name, we know), a former prisoner who seeks redemption once he is released after years of cruel labor. But he’s pursued by Inspector Javert, who pretty much dedicates his entire life to exposing Valjean and putting him back behind bars. There are dozens of other characters, too, who must take their stand as a revolution wages on in France. It’s epic, trust us.

Les Misérables is out on Christmas Day and also stars Hugh JackmanAnne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks and Helena Bonham Carter.
