Though the Disney/Fox deal isn’t coming into effect until next year, Captain America actor Chris Evans is already pitching collaborations with characters from the X-Men universe, chiming in amidst the ongoing fake feud between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to suggest that the in-demand team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine could have a third player.
One of the more recent episodes in the tongue-in-cheek rivalry between the two X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-stars saw Jackman share a photo of an old Logan poster spotted in Mumbai. In response, Reynolds remarked that “It’d be cool if they made a new poster. For a new movie.” And while Reynolds was presumably referring to the Deadpool and Wolverine crossover that he’s long been hounding Jackman about, Evans figured that he too could get in on the action of this theoretical project, tweeting:
“I have my audition monologues prepared.”
It’s unclear if Evans is hinting at a role for Captain America or a new character – and perhaps it doesn’t matter, seeing how this “new movie” will almost certainly never happen – but it’s clear from the comments that fans are thrilled by the very thought of seeing these three together.
Sadly, we’d be lucky to see any two of this trio pair up in their respective superhero roles. For one thing, Jackman continues to show no signs that he wishes to return to the X-Men saga, with recent interviews seeing the actor doubling down on his choice to leave Wolverine in the past. Meanwhile, though Deadpool is soon to become property of Marvel Studios, it’s unclear how the Disney-owned company intends to handle such a foul-mouthed character, with the mixed response to the PG-13 Once Upon a Deadpool suggesting that toning Wade Wilson down to MCU levels of family-friendliness may not be in their best interests.
But regardless of whether we ever get to witness Deadpool and Captain America together, we should still be seeing them each at least once more separately – the former in the planned X-Force movie, and the latter in next year’s Avengers: Endgame. As for Wolverine, the character could well make a return in the MCU, but it probably won’t be Jackman playing him.
