The fans want to see it happen, the studio surely wants to see it happen and now, we can tell you that Chris Hemsworth wants to see it happen, too. We’re talking about Hugh Jackman returning to play Wolverine one last time, now that the character is headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And though the actor has been adamant that he’s done with the role and won’t be back for more, Hemsworth isn’t going to let him go that easily, it seems.
Speaking to Screen Rant this weekend to promote his new film 12 Strong, he first touched on the whole X-Men/Avengers crossover thing, revealing which mutant he most wants to see Thor team up with.
“I mean, Wolverine, just because I love that character, you know what I mean? I just love Hugh Jackman. Unfortunately, he died in the last movie, didn’t he?”
That he did, Chris. But as Screen Rant reminded him, Wolvie has been resurrected in the comics, so who knows what can happen on the big screen? With this in mind, Hemsworth said that he’ll get to work on convincing Jackman to come back.
“We can bring him back to life? Now that you’ve informed me that it’s a possibility, I’m going to get on the phone [with Hugh] and try to coax him over or convince him and see if he has one more in him.”
Try as he might, the Marvel stalwart will probably come up short in getting Jackman to change his mind. After all, it was only the other month when Hugh once again shot down those rumors of him coming back one last time to introduce Wolvie into the MCU, saying that “the ship has sailed.”
“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together,” says Jackman. “And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head.”
Continuing on, he said:
“But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”
There’s not much ambiguity in what Jackman says there, and as awesome as it would be to have him return once more to rub shoulders with the Avengers, we unfortunately can’t see a scenario in which that would come to fruition. Still, who knows? Stranger things have happened and with any luck, Chris Hemsworth might just be able to coax Hugh back into playing Wolverine one final time. Fingers crossed, eh?
