Fans around the globe are ready to set off on a brand-new campaign, and we couldn’t be more excited. So find a sword and grab a shield, because Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is almost here.
With this long-awaited cinematic adaptation of the iconic role-playing game of the same name, fans of the franchise have all been asking a similar question — could this be the movie we’ve been waiting for? Chris Pine sure thinks so, and Hollywood law clearly states that ol’ Chris isn’t someone worth disagreeing with. After all, he plays Captain Kirk.
Following a band of adventurers on their search for an ancient relic, Honor Among Thieves looks to take a standard D&D campaign and turn it on its head. With the film’s March 23 release date, folks won’t have to wait much longer to find out if this movie has what it takes to do the source material justice. If the kick-butt trailer is any indicator though, we think we’re in good hands.
When the film’s title was announced last April, everyone’s first reaction seemed to surround Dungeons & Dragons parent company — Wizards of the Coast. Specifically, their involvement with the project, or the lack thereof.
In an interview with Empire, Chris Pine spoke directly to that franchise collaboration, and what fans should expect from the upcoming fantasy flick.
“I think we benefitted from having Wizards Of The Coast involved, so we could make something that was in line with the world. But you also need to have artists with a perspective to bring it to life, and I credit John and Jonathan with having a viewpoint. They can own it and either cry victory or fall on their sword, so to speak. But it’s not diluted, and I feel quite proud of that. I think we made a film that both players and non-players will like.”
It’s true that the Dungeon & Dragons community couldn’t be more welcoming, but sadly, some people just don’t have an interest in tabletop games. The ability to have a movie bridge that gap between player and casual fan is an opportunity to expand an incredible community, one that we believe needs more attention.
Adaptations of any game, story, or beloved concept can be a bit shaky (to say the least) — but the purpose of creative reinterpretation is to remain faithful to its original content, while providing creative additions where they make sense. Franky, if there’s nothing new being added in the process of creation, why make the thing in the first place?
Thankfully, it looks like the minds behind Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves have been able to strike a perfect balance between old and new, which means all we have to do now is wait for the adventure to begin.
