In the media circus leading up to the imminent release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we’ve been beaten over the head again and again by the threequel’s supposed finality for the space-faring band of misfits, with it being director James Gunn’s big finale before he leaves for greener pastures.
However, just because it may be the end of one of the MCU’s most celebrated sub-franchises, it doesn’t mean that a return isn’t entirely ruled out for a handful of its characters, perhaps even for its leading man Star Lord, played by recently anointed Nintendo mascot Chris Pratt.
While the actor is open to returning to his career-propelling role, he was understandably hesitant about the prospect of making more Guardians of the Galaxy films, and was just about recoiling about the idea without his current co-stars and James Gunn by his side for the journey, as he revealed to ComicBook.
“That’s so daunting. That’s the reason to not do it. I think it would have… it’s so elegant and perfect right now with the three films and so to think of moving forward, it’s really hard and without James, I don’t know how that would work. I’m open to it, but man, I don’t know.”
Gunn, present during the above exchange, went on to chime in and add that he’d love to see the Guardians return, whether it be with Pratt or in another iteration entirely. What that would look like, however, is probably a very distant thought at this point in time for Marvel’s decision-makers, as Gunn prepares to leave Marvel behind once and for all and focus on his duties with DC.
However, for the next couple of weeks, the outgoing director still has a lot of Big Mouse-related duties to fulfill, many press junkets to attend, and posters to sign. It can be an overwhelming period of time, so Gunn employed the help of Nathan Fillion to share the workload, however, Gunn wasn’t particularly pleased with the work the Firefly star was putting in.
