Is there better way to celebrate the holidays than by watching Christmas movies? According to Netflix users, there’s not, because five out of the top ten movies on the current Netflix charts are Christmas ones.
Netflix revealed its global top ten for the week of December 12 through 18 and while Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio held the top spot, number two belongs to the romantic comedy I Believe in Santa, which has almost 20 million hours of viewing.
Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of Netflix: “After five happy months dating Tom, Lisa’s horrified to learn he’s obsessed with her least favorite holiday. Is it time to give Christmas another chance?”
Next up is the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas in the number seven spot, with 7.5 million hours viewed. This is the 2000 Jim Carrey version and not the original animated one. Here’s what it’s about for those who don’t know:
“In this live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Jim Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).”
In the number eight slot we have another romantic comedy called Falling for Christmas. This one stars Lindsay Lohan in an apparent comeback, and the big news is that she’s not bad in it! It has almost 6.5 million hours watched. Check out this review from CNN:
“Some actors shoot for Oscars, and that’s great. Lohan’s magic power has always been bringing to life films that have the simple goal of being unchallenging delights. If for that and that alone, Falling for Christmas is a gift.”
Falling is basically the Goldie Hawn classic Overboard, but instead of a boat we have a ski resort. Lohan plays a spoiled brat with amnesia who, you guessed it, falls in love with a handsome white guy.
The number nine movie on the chart is Scrooge: A Christmas Carol – an animated take on the classic Charles Dickens story about a grumpy old greedy man who changes his ways after he’s visited by three ghosts. About 5.6 million hours watched on that one.
Finally, squeaking into the number 10 spot we have The Noel Diary with 5.5 million hours watched. This one sounds a little heavy:
“Jacob Turner hasn’t been home for almost twenty years not since his mentally ill mother kicked him out of the house when he was just sixteen. When a lawyer calls, days before Christmas, to inform him that his estranged mother has passed away and left her house to him, Jacob returns not just to settle the estate but to try and reconcile with the past and the pain and abuse he experienced as a child.”
All the movies are currently streaming on Netflix.
