According to EW, Nolan addressed the large crowd with a short speech.

“This is all a bit surreal for me,” Nolan announced to the crowd.

“I remember sitting here watching [Caine] honored and thinking, ‘Wow, that’s really the pinnacle of a great career and legend,’ so for me to be honored in the same way, I feel extremely unworthy but very grateful for the honor,” Nolan told EW after the event.

Christopher Nolan is one of my favourite directors of all time, if not my absolute favourite. Thanks to classics like Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception, he’s quickly become an A-lister and is one of the greatest directing talents out there.

He consistently releases original, mind-blowing films, which have audience members in awe of his work. And, as fans await the release of The Dark Knight Rises, early screenings have proven that the legendary director has once again outdone himself.

Congratulations Mr. Nolan, you deserve the honour!

The Dark Knight Rises will open in theatres on July 20, 2012.
