Opening in classic Nolan fashion – the haunting imagery, the tick-tock, Interstellar-esque soundtrack – Dunkirk takes place at a precarious time for the Allied forces when, during World War II, hundreds of thousands of troops were pushed into a bottleneck by the invading Nazis. With their backs to the sea, the soldiers are essentially left staring death in the face, and up above you’ll get an exciting tease of the gravity of the situation.

Often cited as one of the most historic events of WWII, we can’t imagine any other filmmaker better suited to tackling the story of Dunkirk than Christopher Nolan. From Inception to The Prestige to The Dark Knight Trilogy, Nolan continues to display an astute eye for filmmaking on a grand scale, and his latest creative endeavour looks to come packing a brutal physicality befitting of a WWII epic. This, coupled with the promise of extensive IMAX sequences, cements Dunkirk‘s status as one of the big summer blockbusters going into 2017.

Among those on board for the wartime epic are frequent Nolan collaborators Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, along with newcomer Fionn Whitehead, Kenneth Branagh as a brooding general, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and One Direction star Harry Styles.

It was the event that shaped our world and come 2017, Christopher Nolan will introduce the death-defying tale of Dunkirk to the moviegoing masses. July 21 is the date for your diaries, and down below, you’ll catch a glimpse of the film’s two posters, with one touting the style of German propaganda.
