Few could have predicted that, after dying at the hands of Loki in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the cult following surrounding Clark Gregg’s beloved Agent Coulson would lead to him becoming a permanent fixture on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Having brought a wry humor to several films before his eventual demise in Whedon’s superhero ensemble, though, the demand for Coulson to make a triumphant return to the big screen has been palpable and finally, a few weeks ago, we got the news we’d all been waiting for. That being that the fan favorite character would be heading back to the MCU. His next assignment? We’ll give you a clue: it involves shape-shifting aliens and a certain Carol Danvers…
Yes, Clark Gregg is returning for Captain Marvel, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 spinoff that has officially entered production in Los Angeles. And now, we have a set photo from the man himself to prove it – which can be seen in the gallery below along with a few that surfaced last week. It came accompanied with the caption: New job, old friends. #captainmarvel
It’s not much, but with Captain Marvel only just heading in front of cameras recently, it’s surely the first of many and we can’t wait to see what else Gregg’s Phil Coulson will be getting up to in the film. After all, he was the connective tissue that bound Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together – and, by effect, the ‘sacrificial lamb’ whose death galvanized them in The Avengers – so news that he’s headed back to the MCU is a joy, quite frankly.
Ditto for Lee Pace, who will also be in the pic as Ronan the Accuser, a character that brought a sense of gravitas and villainy to Guardians of the Galaxy. And under the shadow of Thanos, no less.
Also starring Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One, Ready Player One), Gemma Chan, Rune Temte, Mckenna Grace and Lashana Lynch as Monica Rambeau, Captain Marvel is due to hit theaters on March 8th, 2019. Closer to home, Marvel Studios has the back-to-back release of Infinity War and Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, which ought to sate our collective appetite for MCU content right up until that magical moment when Brie Larson’s heroine takes flight.
