With just weeks to go before the much anticipated arrival of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans are on high alert for potential spoilers. The trailers delivered in the past six months have gone to great lengths to misdirect the theories of those that would pore over every frame, searching for any hint of a plot point, and we’ve almost reached the release date unhindered by confirmed advance knowledge regarding narrative twists. This, in itself, is an achievement on the part of Lucasfilm and Disney.
But, concerns have been raised online surrounding a new Top Trumps card game, with some fans worried that the details contained on the character cards provides too much insight into the arcs of both Kylo Ren and Rey. However, upon closer inspection, you’ll see that there’s nothing on these cards that’s not already apparent to anyone who’s seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
First up, here’s the description for Kylo:
“After a stinging defeat by scavenger Rey, Kylo Ren refocuses his efforts on destroying the Resistance. Though his powers in the Dark Side have increased, Kylo still has much to prove to his shadowy mentor, Supreme Leader Snoke.”
In addition to that, Kylo Ren has a Fear And Anger rating of 27, and a Greed rating of 160. We already know all of these things about him though, as he’s stated his intent to finish the work of his grandfather – Darth Vader – and has always been a character intent on the accumulation of greater power. This card simply confirms those things.
Likewise, Rey’s card reads as follows:
“At long last, Rey has found Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi Master in the galaxy. Hoping to find a hero of legend, she must unlearn what she has learned as Skywalker challenges her expectations.”
Rey has a Fear And Anger rating of 12 – far less than Kylo Ren – and Greed rating of zero. This is because, as we’ve seen, she doesn’t seek the accumulation of power for herself, but rather justice for the galaxy. We know she found Luke Skywalker and the trailers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi have already made it clear that the Jedi Master will be working with Rey to help her develop her skills.
Undoubtedly, some will try to extrapolate further plot speculation from these incredibly benign Top Trumps character statements – particularly regarding the idea that Kylo Ren would try to corrupt Rey and bring her to the Dark Side – but the fact remains that there are no actual spoilers contained on these cards. They simply provide a non-specific overview of the respective paths on which we already knew Kylo Ren and Rey were travelling, and paths that we’ll see them continue down when Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives on December 15th.
