According to the hosts’ source – who apparently isn’t that big of a Star Wars fan – J.J. Abrams’ upcoming trilogy-closer will contain a MacGuffin that they describe as “delightful.” Among insiders who know a little more about the franchise fandom, however, the development is generally characterized as “controversial.”

Interestingly, it’s also noted that the same people calling the MacGuffin “controversial” were surprised by the amount of discussion that the more polarizing elements of The Last Jedi inspired, suggesting that either this Episode IX MacGuffin is even more divisive, or these insiders may not be the most reliable source on what the fanbase at large will or won’t like.

If all we’re hearing is true, then you can expect the movie to be the subject of some backlash, but really, what else is new? In fact, after Abrams played it safe with The Force Awakens, it’s honestly encouraging to hear that the director might be taking some bigger creative risks this time round.

In any case, though principal photography for Episode IX looks to be nearing its end, Lucasfilm remains tight-lipped on the details of the flick, with reports of an imminent title reveal looking less likely with each passing week. At this rate, Disney might even be saving the moment for the Star Wars Celebration in April, but regardless of what these next couple of months bring, you can expect Star Wars: Episode IX to be saving its biggest reveals for when the film hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
