If The Flash solo movie is currently spinning its wheels – after losing both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa, Warner’s 2018 origin story is still on the hunt for a new director – the opposite is true for James Wan’s Aquaman.
Now that lead star Jason Momoa has all but completed his filming for November’s Justice League, production on Aquaman is expected to get going sometime this summer, and Wan has now called a table read with Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm the Oceanmaster) and Momoa himself.
Hailing from the director’s Twitter feed, there’s no sign of Willem Dafoe, who will be rubbing shoulders with Heard, Wilson and Momoa as Vulko, the Atlantean ally who’s also set to feature in Zack Snyder’s forthcoming ensemble movie. Don’t read into that one too much though, as Dafoe’s schedule likely prevented him from swinging by – either that or the preliminary table read didn’t feature his character whatsoever.
Either way, James Wan’s status report is an exciting milestone for his Aquaman solo movie. Not only does it indicate that filming is imminent, but the photo essentially confirms that the screenplay – one that features contributions from Will Beall, Geoff Johns, Paul Norris, and Mort Weisinger – is locked in. And not a moment too soon.

Aquaman will bring about Arthur Curry’s origin story when the James Wan-directed spinoff opens in October of next year. Could Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam swing by for a cameo? It’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Justice League, on the other hand, has been penciled in for November 17, 2017.
