…and so the Marvel vs. DC rivalry continues. Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan‘s longtime cinematographer, has expressed his distaste for the cinematography in The Avengers.
In a Q&A at Ringing College of Art and Design last week, The Dark Knight Rises cinematographer had some harsh words for the Marvel blockbuster:
I thought The Avengers was an appalling film…They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling.
Pfister won an Oscar for Inception‘s cinematography back in 2011 and is hands down one of the best in his field. That being said, The Avengers cinematographer Seamus McGarvey’s credentials are certainly nothing to scoff at, as he had been Oscar-nominated for his work on Atonement.
Writer and director of The Avengers, Joss Whedon, responded to Pfister’s with: “I’m sorry to hear it, I’m a fan.” Classy.
What do you think? Do Pfister’s remarks have any merit, or was he simply being petty?
