For many, Darren Aronofsky’s decision to direct the next Wolverine film for Fox has been baffling. Nothing about Requiem For a Dream or Pi seems to suggest he would even enjoy something that mainstream. The confusion continues now as it seems Mr. Aronofsky’s production company, Protozoa Pictures, has signed a two year development deal with Fox.

Under the deal, Protozoa will develop and produce films for Fox Searchlight Pictures, as well as Twentieth Century Fox. This suggests that Aronofsky will be afforded the option to work on both small and large scale projects. I, for one, am relieved that he’s not immediately looking to abandon his indie roots. The move isn’t a surprising one, considering the critical and relative financial success of The Wrestler and now Black Swan.

Emma Watts, president of production at Twentieth Century, commented:

“We’re excited Darren is going to bring his unique vision to THE WOLVERINE and we take great satisfaction that Fox, irrespective of the size of his films, continues to provide a home for his extraordinary talent.”
