David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) as been so acclaimed for his work as a director lately that it’s easy to forget that he’s not only a prolific writer, but that he often writes scripts that he has no interest in directing himself. One such script is a horror film that he’s hoping will be directed by torture porn guru Eli Roth (Hostel).

During The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Director’s Roundtable, Russell mentioned that he penned several scripts during his six year directing hiatus between I ♥ Huckabees and The Fighter, one of which was a horror script he never intended to direct himself.

“Well it’ll be coupled with Eli Roth, that’s exciting to me. Cause I had to write to support myself. So I wrote a horror for producer Colleen Camp a horror film that I thought was interesting. And Eli thinks its interesting, I think he’s going to make it more interesting,” he said. “It’s emotional, it’s also… we’ll see. It’s also…I don’t wanna say anything more, I’ll let Eli talk about it.”

While the pairing seems as unlikely as any I could think of, it makes sense that Russell would craft a script with no particular director in mind, and then allow someone like Roth to come in and mould it to fit his style. It’s apparently not something Russell is opposed to either, as he dropped a hint later in the roundtable about another script he’s written that would best fit the style of another director seated at the table.

“I also wrote a supernatural… sort of a time thing, that again is out of my genre. You would probably be better at it than me,” he said pointing to Alfonso Cuaron.

Both of these projects are obviously in the very earliest stages of development, but both are worth keeping an eye on, especially seeing as they come from someone like David O. Russell.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted when we hear more. For now though, tell us, what do you think of Eli Roth directing a David O. Russell-scripted horror film?
